One of the best lessons that an Internet marketer can learn from the study of military strategy and tactics is that of asymmetrical combat. Asymmetrical warfare is defined as a situation in which a much smaller force, through the use of guerrilla tactics and a non-traditional approach, can successfully engage and in some cases neutralize a much larger and more powerful force.
The United States has a long history with asymmetrical warfare. Going all the way back to the Revolutionary War, the Continental Army was one of the first military units to practice it. American troops hid behind trees, picking off British officers at will. This was unheard of in the day, and the tactic was very disruptive to the enemy, both in terms of operational efficiency and morale in general. Later on in American history, the tables were turned in Vietnam when the Vietcong used tactics similar to those of the American minutemen and waged a fluid and amorphous running fight against a stronger and better equipped enemy—us. Vietnam was a bitter lesson and once again highlighted the power of an asymmetrical approach. Today in Afghanistan and Iraq asymmetrical warfare is once again visible within the context of the insurgents utilizing IED’s against American forces. It’s an ongoing lesson and one that is critical to learn.
The take away lesson from asymmetrical warfare is that by using proper strategy and tactics, a much smaller force can compete effectively against a much larger one. For the Internet marketer, this is a critical point to understand. Using the principles of Web 2.0 technology, any Internet marketer, regardless of size and in some cases experience, can compete against much larger companies within the global marketplace. By properly leveraging the Internet and all of the tools available, home-based business entrepreneurs are creating massive cascades of wealth while competing with companies with much larger budgets and many more resources.
The key to utilizing an asymmetric approach to Internet marketing is to find and deploy a system that has been proven and tested in the marketplace. By finding such a system, and tapping in to the educational, training, and support resources associated with it, the Internet entrepreneur can dramatically shorten the learning curve while simultaneously generating substantial revenues and lucrative profits.
The Internet marketplace is wide open to anyone who wants to access it. The key is to not become intimidated by the size and experience of the competition. Instead, by employing the principles of asymmetrical warfare and leveraging a proven system, anyone can find dramatic and massive success online.
